Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a condition affecting the lungs. If one has been diagnosed with COPD, there is a good chance that the doctor has recommended a change in eating habits. Although a healthy diet does not cure the condition, it does go a long way in keeping infections at bay. Here, we have come up with a list of five foods to eat for COPD.

1. Complex carbohydrates
If one has to add carbs to their diet, they should go with complex carbohydrates. These foods are rich in fiber and improve the digestive system function. They also help in regulating the blood sugar levels. Some of the complex carbs that one can add to their diet are bran, peas, quinoa, potatoes with their skin, lentils, barley, oats, and beans.

2. Switch to a balanced diet
Fiber can be acquired from foods such as pasta, bread, vegetables, fruits, seeds, and nuts. One’s daily diet should be such that they consume a minimum of 20 to 30 grams of fiber. Furthermore, one should also add a good protein source to the diet. The protein should be divided between two meals for stronger respiratory muscles. Some of the excellent protein products one can choose from include dried beans, poultry, nuts, milk, cheese, and peas.

If one is required to lose weight for COPD management, they should opt for low-fat sources like low-fat dairy. On the other hand, if a person has to gain weight, they should pick protein sources with more fat content, such as yogurt, whole milk cheese, whole milk, and more.

3. Prefer mono and polyunsaturated fats
Polyunsaturated and mono fats are good fats that lower cholesterol levels. Some of the foods that are rich sources of these fats include vegetable oils (such as avocado and olive oil), avocadoes, seeds, and nuts.

Following a recent study, it was concluded that if someone with COPD aspires to gain some weight, these healthy fats can be included in their meals. However, if one has to lose weight, they need to cut down on all fats, including the polyunsaturated and mono fats.

4. Opt for potassium
Many people with COPD are advised to take diuretic medication, which helps normalize the body fluids. However, a dearth of potassium levels in the body is a common side effect of diuretic medication. One can make up for this loss of potassium by consuming foods that contain a high degree of potassium, such as potatoes, tomatoes, bananas, and oranges.

5. Low-fat smoothies and snacks
These are excellent sources of vitamin D and calcium. Canned shakes are easily accessible and have added vitamins in them. However, making shakes and smoothies at home is advisable. One can use low-fat yogurt and milk in it and add fresh fruits as well.
